How to Stick to Your New Year’s Resolutions

We’re 14 days into the New Year and you may be finding that your New Year’s Resolution is a little more difficult to stick to then you thought – but don’t worry and don’t give up! This is a common problem for a lot of people. Here are a few things you can do to make your resolution more manageable.

Don’t Be Too Hard on Yourself

Just because you cheat on your diet a few times or skip the gym doesn’t mean you should give up on your resolution and get down on yourself. There are 11.5 months until 2019, so you still have a long time to reach your goal. Remind yourself that you are not going to be perfect the entire year! That’s unrealistic! Life is unpredictable and things change. A resolution is just meant to help lead you on a path to a better life. There is no right or wrong way to do it as long as you are striving to be an even better you!

Bet On Yourself

Give a friend or family member $100 and tell them they can’t give it back to you until you reach your goal. Money is a great motivator and the thought of losing it will give you a good reason to stick with your resolution.

Tell Everyone

Post your New Year’s resolution on all of your social media accounts. Knowing that all of your friends and family have seen what it is will make you feel like you HAVE to meet your goal so that you can prove to everyone you can. That “I did it!” post will feel so great!

Reward Yourself

Set up a reward system with yourself. For example – if your goal is to lose 20 lbs, treat yourself to a spa day or weekend vacation once you lose 5lbs! Motivation is key to sticking with resolutions.

Stay Away From Bad Influences

Is your goal to live a happier, more positive life? If so, spending less time with negative people and those who make you feel bad about yourself is a vital part of sticking to your resolution. Is your goal to get more active this year? Hang out more with people who like to go to the gym, hiking, swimming, etc., and less with those who always want to stay in or have unhealthy habits.

Start Small

Instead of making your resolution “lose 40 lbs this year,” make it “lose 10 lbs by summer.” This goal is much more manageable and you will feel less overwhelmed. Short term goals seem much easier to hit than long term ones, so make a few smalls goals throughout the year to reach your big one.
